The aim of this unit is to build upon the introductory course (Principles of Pharmacology PHAR2210) such that the relevance of pharmacological agents to disease therapy is made clear. Emphasis will be placed on explaining general mechanisms and processes underlying some diseases and indicating why and how drug treatments are used to relieve symptoms. Progressive assessment will be held throughout the unit to encourage and support students in adopting a learning strategy that will lead to long term understanding and mastery of material.

Objectives
The objective of this unit is to build on the material presented in Principles of Pharmacology PHAR2210. Both Principles of Pharmacology PHAR2210 and Systems of Pharmacology PHAR2230 are prerequisites for Molecular Pharmacology PHAR3301 and/or Systems Pharmacology PHAR3302.

Programme
The material presented during the semester constitutes the core syllabus. However, students are expected to supplement this material by reading the appropriate chapter of the textbook or other material recommended by lecturers. MCQ progressive assessments will be held shortly after completion of each section of the unit to encourage consolidation and revision of lecture material and give students the opportunity to clarify any particular problems. Four laboratory sessions will be held throughout the semester in the Pharmacology Undergraduate Laboratories (G.17 and G.26) at the Queen Elizabeth II campus. The practical sessions are designed to provide students with additional information and skills as well as to reinforce material presented in lectures.

Components
2 lectures per week. MCQ progressive assessments during the semester. 4 laboratory sessions throughout the semester. A library research skills session in conjunction with a self directed learning assignment on a set topic.

Assessment
A three hour written exam at the end of the semester. Material presented in the unit, lectures and practicals (not the self directed learning assignment), is examinable. The examination paper is divided into two parts. Section A – 60 MCQ (25% of total marks). Section B – 6 out of 8 short answer questions (75% of total marks). The overall distribution of marks in Systems Pharmacology PHAR2230 will be; MCQ assessments – 10%, Laboratories – 20%, Assignment – 10%, Semester exam – 60%.
